The groundbreaking and definitive account of the widespread misdiagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder—and how its unchecked growth over half a century has made ADHD one of the most controversial conditions in medicine, with serious effects on children, adults, and society.
More than 1 in 7 American children get diagnosed with ADHD—three times what experts have said is appropriate—meaning that millions of kids are misdiagnosed and taking medications such as Adderall or Concerta for a psychiatric condition they probably do not have. The numbers rise every year. And still, many experts and drug companies deny any cause for concern. In fact, they say that adults and the rest of the world should embrace ADHD and that its medications will transform their lives.
In ADHD Nation, Alan Schwarz examines the roots and the rise of this cultural and medical phenomenon: The father of ADHD, Dr. Keith Conners, spends fifty years advocating drugs like Ritalin before realizing his role in what he now calls “a national disaster of dangerous proportions”; a troubled young girl and a studious teenage boy get entangled in the growing ADHD machine and take medications that backfire horribly; and big Pharma egregiously over-promotes the disorder and earns billions from the mishandling of children (and now adults).
While demonstrating that ADHD is real and can be medicated when appropriate, Schwarz sounds a long-overdue alarm and urges America to address this growing national health crisis.

Cecilia Gärding, author ("Afroswedish"), filmmaker, ethnologist and political scientist, is now releasing her second book, "Diversity in the Swedish Film Heritage 1890-1950".
This time the book is about the Swedish Film Heritage and the representation of the ethnic diversity in the films between 1890 and 1950. At the invitation of the Academy, the book will launch at the Student Academy Awards, September 22, where she will promote the book at the Margaret Herrick Library.
Cecilia Gärding wrote the book "Afroswedish" in the new Sweden in 2010 and produced the film "We are like Oranges" in 2012. The film was honored as the “Best Foreign Film” at the LA Femme Film Festival in Hollywood in 2014. This film was the first to portray an Afroswedish young man as a hero in the lead role in Swedish film history.
Film as an art form came to Sweden after the major powers in Europe had colonized large parts of the world, during the heyday of racial thinking and at the time of mass emigration. The book addresses how this affected films and how film as such was introduced to a Swedish public, thanks to foreign entrepreneurs. Film quickly became the most popular form of entertainment. But what images did the films disseminate about different ethnic groups?
This book is the first in Sweden to give an overview of 60 years of film history where the focus is on how ethnic minorities and people in European colonies and other countries have been presented in documentaries and films. The book presents and compares how, the Sami, Jews, the Roma, Finns, Turks, Arabs, Asians and Africans has been portrayed. This is to demonstrate how these groups have been stereotyped and very seldom even given the chance to play themselves.
The development of Swedish society, Real politiks, racial thinking and the colonial ambitions of the Swedish state are discussed to highlight the fact that film has often been used to serve the interests of those in power. About half of the book deals with the Second World War where more light is shed on how world events also affected Swedish film. The book explains why the Swedish film industry played an active role in the SS-led International Film Chamber and the consequences of that co-operation regarding the films made and its anti-Semitic presentations. This cooperation also ensured that Sweden did not create anti-nazi film productions between 1935-1943.
The book also explains how prejudices promoted by the use of stereotypes and race performativity (e.g. when an ethnic Swede plays a person of another ethnic background) affect us biologically. The book advances suggestions of what needs to be done to increase the inclusion of ethnic minority groups in the film sector through the inclusion model, the 25% rule developed by the author. The medium of film can change how we perceive ourselves and others. It is up to us to manage that possibility to the benefit of all.
The book is one of the end results of the youth project The Cultural Heritage Agents, a project for young workers with an ethnic minority background in the cultural sector. The project was conducted under the auspices of Kulturens. The book is published by Lyxo publishers.

Since expensive musical instruments were not within attainable for families in Cateura, Favio, along with carpenter and trash picker Nicolas "Cola" Gomez, began to craft instruments from materials found in the landfill to provide children with the opportunity to play. They journey exceeds all expectations as they find themselves playing for audiences around the world, even accompanying artists such as Stevie Wonder, Metallica and Megadeth. LOOK AT YOU NOW
My Journey from Shame to Strength
A Memoir by Liz Pryor
“Pregnant at 17, Good Morning America’s Liz Pryor was hidden in a juvenile detention center by her ashamed family. A poignant, often funny reminder that we learn who we are when we’re at our most challenged.”—Good Housekeeping
“A searingly honest recounting of what it’s like to both love your parents and realize their all-too-
human frailties.”—Family Circle
“This is a funny, tender and brave coming-of-age tale.”— People Magazine
“Authentic and unforgettable”—Publishers Weekly
“Unsentimental yet moving”—Kirkus
For readers of Orange Is the New Black and Girl Interrupted,
a powerful memoir about a lifelong secret, and a dramatic experience that will change a young girl’s life forever
In 1979, Liz Pryor is a seventeen-year-old girl from a good family living in a wealthy Chicago suburb. Halfway through her senior year of high school, Liz discovers she is pregnant—a fact that her parents are determined to keep a secret forever. They don’t want their daughter’s future defined by this mistake. They also want to protect their family’s name. One snowy January day, after driving across three states, Liz’s mother drops her off at what Liz thinks is a Catholic home for unwed mothers—but when they arrive, she learns that the home is actually a locked, government-run facility for delinquent and impoverished pregnant teenage girls.
In the cement-block residence, Liz is alone and terrified: a girl from a privileged, sheltered background living amid tough, street-savvy girls who come from the foster care system or juvenile detention. But over the next six months, isolated and in hiding from everyone she knows, Liz finds herself questioning everything she was once taught about the world. Left to fend for herself she eventually bonds with the girls and, for the first time, sees life through a wider lens.
Told from the perspective of that fragile yet resilient 17 year-old-girl, LOOK AT YOU NOW is an honest, moving, suspenseful story about finding strength and friendship in the most unlikely circumstances. Liz’s journey speaks to the power of family to elude us even as they are closest to us, and to the value of digging deeply to learn who we are as individuals. For anyone who has lived with a version of judgment or shame, this book offers a reminder of the power we have to define our own lives. Infused on every page with the drama of how one single mistake can change everything, this is a memoir you will not forget.
Here is a great discussion guide for Look at You Now.
What Did I Do Wrong? - Liz Pryor
The journey of this book began as a simple self-exploration of my own experiences with lost friendships. I was convinced I was the only woman on the planet who suffered the shame, guilt and confusion at the ending of my friendships. When I finally began to open up about these experiences with other women, I quickly learned it wasn’t just me, and then I realized I wanted to write this book. Real life stories from ordinary everyday women, paved the way to breaking the silence on a subject so many of us experience and so few of us ever discuss.
When women end friendships with each other they often give-and get- the silent treatment. No reasons, no warning, no nothing. Without the societal support or understanding that accompanies romantic split-ups, most women suffer the loss of female friendship in silence.
WHAT DID I DO WRONG? is the first book to break that silence, examining the special bonds that characterize female friendships. It then helps women understand why friendships fizzle by explaining how to recognize the signs of trouble, how to resolve the old wounds, and even, sometimes how to to reconnect and resolve matters with old friends.
I’d love to hear stories and ideas from women who have anything to share relating to this subject. If you’re not sure your experiences are related try reading an excerpt or asking a question. I look forward to hearing from you. You can e-mail me at liz@lizpryor.com
WHAT DID I DO WRONG? is now available and is published by Free Press, a division of Simon & Schuster.
Liz Pryor is an author, speaker, parenting columnist, and life advice expert. Her book about female friendship, What Did I Do Wrong?, was a finalist for a Books for a Better Life Award. In 2011, ABC’s Good Morning America conducted a national search for an on-air life advice guru, and out of fifteen thousand applicants, Pryor was choen for the position. She lives in Los Angeles with her three children.

ABOUT THE FILMOMAR SOSA'S 88 WELL-TUNED DRUMS is a documentary film on the life and music of Cuban-born pianist and composer Omar Sosa. CHECK OUT THE OFFICIAL TRAILER:
The film traces Sosa’s origins from his birth in Camagüey, Cuba’s third-largest city, conservatory education in Havana, and relocation to Ecuador where he briefly wrote and arranged commercial jingles. Sosa’s story continues with a fateful mid-90s move to the U.S., a stint as a sought-after sideman in the Bay Area’s Latin jazz scene, and partnership with manager Scott Price that continues to this day.
Since 1997, Sosa has released nearly 30 albums and received four Grammy nominations and three Latin Grammy nominations. Performing over 80 concerts on six continents annually, Sosa is known for a rhythmic style (hence the “Drums” of the film’s title) and musical influences as varied as his travel itinerary.
Since 2013, whenever Sosa appeared in the northeastern U.S., Providence-based filmmaker Soren Sorensen (MY FATHER'S VIETNAM, 2016) was granted unprecedented access to Sosa and his bandmates for interviews, rehearsals, and performances. OMAR SOSA'S 88 WELL-TUNED DRUMS includes glimpses of the globetrotting artist in duo with celebrated Italian trumpeter Paolo Fresu, with the Afri-Lectric Experience, and with his latest band, the Quarteto AfroCubano in storied venues including New York’s Blue Note Jazz Club.
Sosa’s Quarteto AfroCubano features fellow Camagüey natives Ernesto Simpson on drums and Leandro Saint-Hill on alto saxophone and flute and bassist Childo Tomas, who hails from Maputo, Mozambique. Perhaps most thrilling for fans is the full-circle nature of Sosa’s 2015 album Ilé, which reunited Sosa’s music with its Cuban roots. LEARN MORE ABOUT ILÉ:
I was first introduced to Sosa’s music late in 2011 by Tony Aguilar, publisher and editor-in-chief of an arts magazine called Tribe. Aguilar had hired me to write and edit for Tribe and we decided that Omar Sosa would make a great addition to the magazine’s first issue. Alma, Sosa’s 2012 collaboration with Italian trumpeter Paolo Fresu, was to be released in early 2012. After a few phone conversations and email exchanges with Scott Price, Sosa’s affable Oakland-based manager, it was decided that I would interview Sosa via Skype. What I thought would be a fifteen-minute conversation promoting ALMA stretched into an hour or more.
Sosa’s story captivated me.
His otherworldly talent as a pianist, composer and bandleader is only equalled by his enigmatic charisma as a person. It was obvious that other people loved his music as much as I did. Figuring that, like me, Sosa’s fans and admirers around the world might like to know more about the artist, I asked some very generous friends, who happen to be excellent cinematographers, for some help.
During the last three years we captured live performances of Sosa in duo with Paolo Fresu, with the Afri-Lectric Experience and with his Quarteto AfroCubano, who we visited at Systems Two Recording Studio in Brooklyn, NY during sessions for their 2015 album, Iié. Conversations with Sosa and his collaborators including Fresu, Leandro Saint-Hill, Ernesto Simpson, Childo Tomas and Peter Apfelbaum bring the audience closer to Sosa’s music than anyone has ever been.

Moneeka Sawyer has often been described as one of the most joyful people you will ever meet. She finds her bliss through helping people live a life filled with meaning, purpose, passion, and joy. She has been coaching in the Silicon Valley for over 10 years and her unique approach has helped clients from artists and soloprenuers, to high-tech CEO’s discover their own personal definition of bliss and create a whole new sense of power, energy, and excitement about their lives. She shares her life and her joy with her wonderful husband, David, and adorable Pomeranian in Mountain View, CA
Choose Bliss: New Book Proves a Life of Constant Joy & Contentment *IS* Possible. It’s a Paradigm Changer Critics Hail “Authentic & Powerful”
Masterfully crafted from the life, experiences and wisdom of Moneeka Sawyer, ‘Choose Bliss: The Power and Practice of Joy and Contentment’ empowers readers to embrace the fact that bliss isn’t circumstantial, but is rather a constant state of being that anyone can thrive in. Through both deeply-personal vignettes and a host of practical exercises, Sawyer walks readers through learning how to never settle for “just good enough” and how creating true power and prosperity can be as easy as a few simple mindset shifts…
Mountain View, CA – Those who know Moneeka Sawyer often regard her as one of the happiest, most joyous and positive people they’ve ever met. It’s far from a front; Sawyer is truly blissful at all times and feels totally in control of every decision she makes.
It’s a unique yet totally transformative state of mind underpinned by a series of foundational “bliss practices” that anyone can deploy. In her new book, Sawyer explains how you too can be as happy and content as she is.
‘Choose Bliss: The Power and Practice of Joy and Contentment’ will leave readers reveling in their new life steeped with opportunity, positivity and bliss that goes far and beyond being a buzzword. It’s a book about the power to choose, and how these choices can easily create a reality more blissful than anyone believed possible.
Synopsis:
This book is about your power to choose. It is a paradigm changer that will transform your view of your life, the world around you, and what is truly possible. Filled with thought-provoking concepts, it will teach you simple bliss practices you can implement immediately and short exercises to integrate bliss into your life forever. The tools in this book have proven successful time and time again. So, from this day forward, you don't have to settle for good enough.
“The issue is that most people fall into a state of complacency, creating a vicious circle where they live “robotically” and become frustrated when they’re seldom happy,” explains Sawyer. “My book and my entire philosophy will amplify anyone’s inner light and rekindle the love in their heart. After all, don’t we all deserve to live surrounded by bliss? Feeling happy, strong and free is so empowering that it’s almost hard to put into words. This book will help anyone identify the mental, physical and spiritual adversity that’s holding them back and then inspire them to emerge victorious into a life they have only ever dreamed of.”
Continuing, “I want people to remember that they have a choice about every single thought, movement and action they make in life. When you understand how to make each of these decisions with a continuing life of bliss as the goal, amazing things begin to happen. Just ask the people I’ve helped who have proven first-hand that my methods are rock-solid and proven.”
Since its release, the book has garnered a consistent string of five-star reviews. For example, H. Blanchard comments, “I’ve read a lot of self-help books and this one feels different - more authentic - because Moneeka shares her own life journey and how she overcame problems in a way that I could relate to. The main thing I will take away is that changes are not linear and you don’t have to take action A, then B, then C etc. you can have bliss now even though you haven’t worked your way through to Z yet. I also found that as I read she left cues for the forthcoming chapters that my subconscious started working on so that when I got to the chapter on that subject e.g. Gratitude, I had already started working it into my daily routine naturally.”
James R. Cichoracki adds, “Moneeka's insights and her compelling stories (from her challenging childhood where she was relentlessly bullied to her hard choice a few years ago to not become a mother) demonstrate how deeply devoted she is to the amazing principles of choosing bliss no matter what her circumstances. I found myself underlining and making notes of things I want to incorporate into my life to live the joy-filled life that Moneeka clearly embodies every day. This book is full of gems!”

ABOUT DR. ESTELLE TOBY GOLDSTEIN
My name is Estelle Toby Goldstein, MD and I'm known as "The Renegade Doctor" -- and the reason they call me that is because I'm going to tell you the things the doctors, hospitals, insurance and big drug companies DON'T want you to know ... In our radio chat, I'm going to tell your listeners how to live pain free without using over-the-counter products that damage your body, without prescription narcotics that are potentially addictive and even lethal, without going to a doctor, and without spending all of your money. I'm here to tell you about natural products that can do the exact same things as prescription drugs, without the dangers, and without the costs, and I'm going to tell you where you can find these products on your own in local stores, on the internet or by mail-order.
We have been missing out on some of the greatest advances in medicine. Not because they are so new -- some of these are many years old -- maybe centuries. But the knowledge has been buried by the special interests who not only want to keep you paying for things that may not work, and may make you worse -- This knowledge is used all over the world. It is written up in medical journal -- but usually not in the USA.
And like nearly all Americans, you probably don't even know you've been missing out. If you talk to your doctor about a natural product or an alternative treatment, you will be told that it is too risky, it hasn't been proven, there's not evidence that it works. When the truth is, most have more scientific backing than anything in your doctor's sample cabinet.
If you've been feeling that modern medicine has been making you worse instead of better, then this may be the most important 20 minutes you will ever spend.
NEWS:
I will be opening my private practice in Orange County soon, and my emphasis will be in getting people off of prescription drugs safely and with minimal discomfort. I can then give them natural treatments to take the place of those drugs, and in some cases, eventually make them totally free of the underlying problem so they don't need to take anything.
I am also going to start a series of free seminars soon concentrating on Massive Obesity -- people who are at least 50 lbs and even 100 lbs or more overweight as judged by BMI. I have written a book about my own struggles.
