A leader in the fields of animal ethics and neurology, Dr. Aysha Akhtar examines the rich human-animal connection and how interspecies empathy enriches our well-being. Deftly combining medicine, social history and personal experience, Our Symphony with Animals is the first book by a physician to show how deeply the well-being of humans and animals are entwined. Interwoven throughout is Dr. Akhtar’s own story of being a young girl who was bullied in school and sexually abused by her uncle. Feeling abandoned by humanity, it was only when she met Sylvester, a dog who had also been abused, that she found strength for both of them. Against the backdrop of her inspiring story, Dr. Akhtar asks, what do we gain when we recognize our kinship with animals? She travels around the country to tell the stories of a varied cast of characters―including a former mobster, an industrial chicken farmer, a Marine veteran―and comes face to face with a serial killer. Through storytelling that is entertaining, profound, and touching, Dr. Akhtar reveals what happens when we both break and forge bonds with animals. She demonstrates how humans are neurologically designed to empathize with animals, and how violence against them goes against our nature. In equal measure, the love and friendship we give to other species biologically reverberates back to us. Humanity’s compassion for animals is the next step in our species’ moral evolution and a vital component of our own health. Our Symphony with Animals is the definitive account for why our relationships with animals matter. 8 pages of color photographs

Teacher Appreciation Day, which takes place annually on the first Tuesday in May, is quickly approaching on May 7, 2019! Internationally bestselling author Alyson Richman's latest novel, THE SECRET OF CLOUDS (Berkley Hardcover; On Sale February 19, 2019) is an emotionally charged story of a dedicated teacher who works with a student with a rare illness, and how each is shaped and changed by the other.
In an interview, Richman will talk about the following topics:
The book was inspired by one of Richman’s dear friends, a teacher in Richman’s native Long Island, NY, who shared how she once tutored a child who was too sick to attend school, and realized a decade later what a lasting impression this student had on her life.
Richman’s friend also shared a special lesson she uses in all of her classes. Each year, this teacher has students write letters to their future selves, and she then seals these letters in addressed envelopes and keeps them in a drawer for years. When these students are set to graduate high school, Richman’s friend mails the letters back. Richman was so moved by this story that she decided to incorporate it into her book.
Richman did extensive research to inform the novel, particularly into the teaching methods and lesson plans that she describes. She selected such methods because they are based on first-hand accounts of use in Long Island school districts.

Janeane spoke with JASON BAUMANN New York Public Library Coordinator of Humanities and LGBTQ Collections JASON BAUMANN,
New York Public Library Coordinator of Humanities and LGBTQ Collections
Thursday, May 2, 2019
In honor of the 50th anniversary of the historic Stonewall uprising, a new anthology celebrating the past, present, and future of LGBTQ activism
Among the topics covered in THE STONEWALL READER:
· The presence of LGBTQ activism before Stonewall: Although many people think of the Stonewall uprising as the start of LGBTQ liberation movements, they were preceded by almost a decade of activism from organizations like the Mattachine Society and the Daughters of Bilitis, who organized conferences, published nationally distributed magazines, and demonstrated at the White House and the Pentagon.
· The emergence of transgender political organizing: Some might consider transgender activism to be a recent phenomenon, but there was an emerging transgender rights movement in the 1960s through pioneering magazines like Tranvestia and organizations like the Erickson Educational Foundation and the Labyrinth Foundation Counseling Service.
· The people of color on the front lines: Trailblazing figures like African American activists Ernestine Eckstein, Joel Hall, and Marsha P. Johnson, Latinx activists Sylvia Rivera and Jeanne Córdova, and Japanese American activist Kiyoshi Kuromiya were at the center of the LGBTQ movements of the time.
· Early queer revolts: Stonewall was preceded by earlier queer revolts like the Cooper Do-nuts Riot in Los Angeles in 1959, the Dewey’s restaurant sit-in in Philadelphia in 1965, the Compton’s Cafeteria Riot in San Francisco in 1966, and the protests against the raid of the Black Cat Tavern in Los Angeles in 1967, among others.

Everyone knows the name Helen Gurley Brown, Cosmopolitan’s famous Editor-in-Chief and the inspiration for fictional NYC women like Carrie Bradshaw, Peggy Olson, and Hannah Horvath. A new novel set in 1960s New York sheds light on the surprisingly tumultuous beginning of Gurley Brown’s 32-year reign at Cosmo, including how she kept the lights on at the magazine even as she was railroaded by Hearst executives.
When Gurley Brown took the reins in 1965, she was best known as the author of the controversial Sex and the Single Girl, and was viewed as an unbecoming choice to lead a magazine with a rich literary history. But the changes she brought—from sexy covers featuring young women to grabby headlines that were the precursor to clickbait—turned Como’s fortunes around and revolutionized women’s magazines.
The story of those early months is told through the eyes of Gurley Brown’s fictional assistant, in Renee Rosen’s historical novel PARK AVENUE SUMMER (April 30, 2019). Informed by Rosen’s extensive research—including interviews with Lois Cahall, who considered Helen her second mother—the novel contains irresistible details only those closest to Helen would know.
ABOUT
Mad Men meets The Devil Wears Prada as Renée Rosen draws readers into the glamour of 1965 New York City and Cosmopolitan Magazine, where a brazen new Editor-in-Chief--Helen Gurley Brown--shocks America by daring to talk to women about all things off limits...
New York City is filled with opportunities for single girls like Alice Weiss who leaves her small Midwestern town to chase her big city dreams and unexpectedly lands the job of a lifetime working for Helen Gurley Brown, the first female Editor-in-Chief of a then failing Cosmopolitan Magazine.
Nothing could have prepared Alice for the world she enters as editors and writers resign on the spot, refusing to work for the woman who wrote the scandalous bestseller, Sex and the Single Girl. While confidential memos, article ideas, and cover designs keep finding their way into the wrong hands, someone tries to pull Alice into this scheme to sabotage her boss. But Alice remains loyal and becomes all the more determined to help Helen succeed. As pressure mounts at the magazine and Alice struggles to make her way in New York, she quickly learns that in Helen Gurley Brown's world, a woman can demand to have it all.

TORONTO (April 2, 2019) – Following a successful theatrical run and sold-out film festival screenings across Canada –the critically acclaimed feature documentary THE WOMAN WHO LOVES GIRAFFES bowed at the Sonoma International Film Festival taking home Best Documentary Feature and the Audience Award for Best Documentary. Just prior to winning these awards, the filmmakers signed an exclusive distribution agreement with leading worldwide distributer, Off the Fence.
THE WOMAN WHO LOVES GIRAFFES re-traces the trail-blazing journey of Dr. Anne Innis Dagg, who in 1956, at only 23 years old, became the first person in the world to scientifically research the behaviour of an animal in the wilds of Africa, four years before Jane Goodall ventured into the world of chimpanzees and seven years before Dian Fossey left to work with mountain gorillas. The documentary offers an intimate account of her life as a young woman through personal correspondence and original 16mm film, juxtaposed with a first-hand look at the devastating reality that giraffes are facing today.
The film explores the insurmountable barriers Dagg faced as a female biologist whose research findings ultimately became the foundation for many scientists following in her footsteps. Though her pioneering efforts were groundbreaking, upon her return to Canada, her career as a professor was destroyed when she applied for tenure at the University of Guelph in the 1970s and was denied. It was the catalyst that transformed Dagg into a feminist activist.
The film’s impact on audiences led to the University issuing a rare apology to Dagg last month, delivered by Dr. Jonathan Newman, Dean of the College of Biological Science (CBS), which “recognized and confronted errors of the past” and confirmed that the University of Guelph has become a “more respectful, diverse, and equitable place to work” since that time. Dr. Newman announced the creation of the Dr. Anne Innis Dagg Summer Research Scholarship in “recognition of her pioneering research on, and significant contributions to, the study of giraffe,” to be awarded annually to one female undergraduate student majoring in either Zoology or Biodoversity.
The exclusive worldwide distribution deal was negotiated by the film’s Executive Producer, Paul Zimic and Off the Fence Head of Acquisitions, Loren Syer-Willoughby. Off the Fence will launch the film at the upcoming MIPTV market in Cannes later this month. Syer-Willoughby says, "We have been tracking this project for quite some time now. The overall story was a perfect fit for Off the Fence. The team worked so hard to deliver such a beautiful documentary with not only heart, humour but also a strong conservation message. Anne Dagg is an absolute inspiration, which I think will resonate with audiences around the world. Her pioneering work in the early days of giraffe research makes her one of the key players we will always turn to when we think of giraffes. "
THE WOMAN WHO LOVES GIRAFFES is directed and written by Alison Reid and produced by Joanne Jackson and Alison Reid. Executive Producer is Paul Zimic. The documentary features the voices of Tatiana Maslany, Victor Garber, David Chinchilla, and Lindsay Leese who read letters written by young Anne, Anne’s husband, Ian Dagg, and Anne’s mother, Mary Quayle Innis.
The film was made with the participation of Ontario Creates Film Fund, Telefilm Canada and the Rogers Group of Funds through the Theatrical Documentary Program, the Rogers Documentary Fund, KinoSmith Inc., and Rogers Telefund. It is a Bell Media/Crave Original Documentary.
